Brief History of Elche

Elche's history stretches back over 2,500 years to the ancient Iberian settlement of L'Alcúdia, where the famous Lady of Elche sculpture was discovered in 1897. This masterpiece of Iberian art, now housed in Madrid's National Archaeological Museum, symbolizes the city's deep historical roots.

During the Roman period, the city flourished as Ilici, becoming an important colony.
